Baseline Assessments

How to add a Baseline Assessment for a child starting at your setting.

Updated yesterday

What is a Baseline?

A Baseline records where a child is currently in their learning and development when they first join. It sets a starting point; future Learning & Development (L&D) observations then build on—and supersede—this snapshot.

Tip: Make sure your Learning Frameworks are set up first. Go to Settings → Learning Frameworks if you haven’t configured these yet.

How to create a Baseline

  1. Go to Children and open the child’s profile.

  2. Tap EYFS Reports.

  3. Open Individual Monitoring.

  4. For the Baseline Report, enter the child’s levels for the relevant Monitoring Titles under each Area of Learning.

  5. Click Set Baseline (top-right).

  6. Choose the date and confirm Set New Baseline.

Important notes

  • For new starters: Baseline is intended for children just starting at your setting to provide an overall starting assessment.

  • Superseded by observations: Any L&D observations after the Baseline will override it as the most up-to-date view of progress.

  • If observations exist already: You cannot set a Baseline for a child who already has L&D observations on their profile.
